Baby Essentials: What You Really Need

Ever wondered what products you really need when it comes to babies? Being a first time mom, I was clueless. And like many first time moms, I wanted everything. I dropped big bucks on baby gear, without batting an eyelash. Every trip to Target meant waddling around the baby section.

Looking back, we definitely could have gone without some of the things I thought were “essentials.” So mamas, daddys, and soon to be mamas and daddys, this post is for you! I’ll post my must haves, with links to make it super easy to shop.

This is what you really need when you have a baby:

Baby Wrap Carrier

This was a lifesaver for me. Once you figured out how to master the wrap, this thing will be your best friend. Hint: check out youtube for tutorials on tying the wrap

When Myla was a newborn, she loved being held. And she loved being close to her mama. As much as I wanted to sit on the couch and stare at her all day (which I often did), I needed to get things done around the house too. This wrap enabled me to move freely around, hands free, while she was content being close to my chest. It was also great for being out in public, to help keep germs and old ladies away.

This swing rocks! Myla was so content in it, and would stay asleep for hours. You can adjust the motion settings, as well as the direction. The padding comes off easily too, in case you experience any blowouts (I’m speaking from experience). It also doesn’t take up a crazy amount of space. We moved it around between our living room and kitchen. I plan on using this swing for all my babies. And yes, there will be more.

Infant Car Seat and Stroller

I know what you’re thinking… duh! But, I’m here to recommend the travel system that we used. When I was adding car seats and strollers to my baby registry, I relied strictly on reviews. And when I tell you I read the reviews for every… single… car seat and stroller I could find… 5 stars only, or close to it please.

I ended up picking out this Graco Travel System. I love it because the car seat and stroller go together. I preferred the jogging stroller, because I knew I would be doing a lot of walking outside. If you aren’t a huge walker, I’m not sure this is the best stroller for you. It is pretty large when it comes to maneuvering around stores, but I always made it work.

The car seat clicks right into the base, which you install into your car. You can remove the car seat from the base with one button, and place the car seat directly into the stroller, which also clicks to lock. It’s super secure, and we got so much use out it.

We just retired the car seat after Myla’s first birthday, but we still use the jogging stroller often. Overall, I was really happy with my choice to get this travel system. Also, shoutout to my BFFs who got it for us as I present. ♥️

Diaper Backpack

Yes, I had a vision I would carry around this super cute purse and call it a diaper bag, but I quickly realized how unrealistic that was.

Honestly, you need a backpack with lots and lots of pockets. Backpacks are the best because you can sling it on your back and go about your business. Especially if you are carrying a baby, you don’t want to be carrying a diaper bag in your arms too.

I love the diaper backpack we chose. It’s super practical, sturdy, and gender neutral so Scottie can wear it too. 😉 It also has soooo many pockets. Pockets for bottles, wipes, diapers, snacks, toys, etc. You name it, there’s a pocket for it. It also comes with a changing pad, which we still use to this day.

P.S. this brand also sent a cute little baby wash cloth as a gift inside the bag, which I was thought super cute.

Snuggle Me Organic

I was torn between the Dock-a-Tot and the Snuggle Me, but after my research, I’m so happy I went with the Snuggle Me. It’s so soft and comfortable, I wish they made them in adult sizes.

It fit perfectly in between us in the bed. And it’s super portable. We constantly moved it around the house, from our room to the living room to the kitchen. It provided a great, soft place to put Myla down, wherever we were.

The cover is also extremely easy to remove, so you can throw it in the wash whenever you need to. It’s definitely a must-have item for your little one.

Some families choose bassinets, but we chose a Pack-n-Play. We knew we would get so much use out of it long after Myla was a newborn, and she still uses it to this day to play in.

I love this Pack-n-Play by Graco, because it has so many different features. It has a reversible napper and diaper changer. Hard to picture? One side is a napper, so your newborn can sleep directly in it. When they need a diaper change, you simply flip over the napper, and there is an easy-to-clean changing pad.

When you don’t want to use this feature, you can remove it easily, which gives you access to the higher level of the Pack-n-Play.

We kept it right next to our bed, because this is where Myla slept when she was not in the bed with us. It was high up enough where I didn’t have to bend down to reach her, but not so high that I was worried about her falling.

We also placed a mattress in there for extra comfort.

It was so practical and convenient, and easy to assemble. Today, we keep it in our living room filled with toys when we need a place to set her down without her wandering off. We also bring it with us for her to sleep in if we are ever away from home for the night.

Make this one of your must-have baby items!

Hatch Baby Rest Sound Machine

I love this sound machine so much. We still use it today, and it plays a huge role in helping Myla sleep at night. When she was a newborn, we didn’t use it so much for the noise, but for the nightlight.

You really can’t have the room pitch black when you have a baby. This nightlight provided us with just enough light so I could see Myla and our surroundings, but not so much that it interrupted our sleep (when we got any).

You can control this sound machine right from your phone through the free app, called “Rest.” It connects to your device through bluetooth, and you can change the sound and light settings. It has so many different types of noises, from rain to lullabies, and you can pick any color to display, as well as the brightness.

We honestly cannot live without this sound machine.

Baby Bath Support

This bath support was a huge hit with Myla. We got so much use out of it, because we used it with every bath. We had to retire it when she was around 6 months and could sit up fully on her own. But it’s in great condition, and we will definitely hold onto it for my other babies in the future! It’s lightweight, super practical, easy to clean, and doesn’t collect mold or mildew. Plus, it fits in pretty much every bath tub. And at such a good price, I don’t know why people chose anything else.

Diapers & Wipes

You might LOL at this one. I know this is SO obvious. But when I tell you to stock up while you can… I mean it.

When I was pregnant, I used to look at Myla’s closet and laugh. We had so. many. wipes. We had more wipes than we had diapers by hundreds. I thought we were set until she was at least one, but I was so wrong.

We went through all those wipes in just a few short months.

Babies go through like 15+ diapers a day, or at least Myla did. I felt like I was buying diapers and wipes left and right.

We use Pampers Pure. And I love them. They are clean, lightweight, and successfully hold all of Myla’s loads. We’ve tried other brands in the past, but I always go back to Pampers Pure.

One time, I remember buying Pampers Cruisers or one of those toddler brands, and Scottie goes, “Why did you buy scented diapers?” Ew… diapers shouldn’t have a scent! Hint: those are chemicals!

My point is, stock up while you can! Each time you make a trip to the grocery store, buy a pack of wipes. Trust me, you’ll always need them.

Now you and me both know these are not the only things you will be buying for baby. I’m talking about those trips to Target, where you wander down the baby aisle and buy a new outfit every. single. time.

But these are my tried and true newborn essentials that I guarantee will make things easier… well as easy as life with a newborn can get anyway.

I hope this helped out some mamas and daddys out there!
